Central secures spot in the quarterfinals with 46-32 win over PCHS

CORINTH—The Central Red Devils boys basketball team needed at least one win in their final three games to avoid a class C preliminary round game. The Red Devils got that win in convincing fashion over the Piscataquis community high school(PCHS) Pirates on Saturday afternoon.

Central scored the first seven points of the game and rolled to a 46-32 victory over the Pirates. The Red Devils held a 13-2 lead after the first quarter and they took a 25-8 lead going into the half.

“Coach (Curt Davis) just told us to come out hard, and we came out hard.”Central junior forward Kyle Ham said. “This is really important to us. I think we played really well as a team.”

Each week during the high school sports season the Eastern Maine High School Sports Examiner and the Eastern Maine Sports Blog will announce a female and male athlete of the week. This is the last week that we will be doing athlete of the week for the winter season. Here is a look at previous winners. Hopefully we get just as many great nominations for the spring season starting in April.

Winter season- Week 7- January 30th- February 11th

Male

David McKusick- Dexter – David was instrumental in helping the Dexter Regional High cheering squad win the Eastern Maine Class C title. David is really the key to the team. He is strong and is able to provide excellent basket tosses and catches, he is very agile – he is by far the best tumbler on the team, and is always willing to do whatever to motivate his team. His team mates and school mates love and respect him. Since the Eastern Maine competition, McKusick spent 11 days in the hospital. He missed the state championship competition due to an infection in his heart.

Runner up

Jordan McLaughlin- Washburn- Basketball-  Recorded 42 points and seven steals in 82-43 victory over Fort Fairfield. Scored 21 points in 83-28 over Ashland. Scored 33 points in 94-62 victory over Southern Aroostook. Recorded 28 points and seven assists in 75-61 victory over Easton.

Third Place

Mitch Worcester- Washburn- Basketball- Recorded 27 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and seven steals in 82-43 victory over Fort Fairfield.  Scored 29 points including going 11-11 from the FT line in 94-62 victory over Southern Aroostook.Recorded 36 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists in 75-61 victory over Easton.
